Empowering Young Lives in Northern Uganda

By Atim Racheal | Fundraiser

Dear Esteemed donors

Recently we conducted a field visit to the Acutkum community in Lira District, Northern Uganda. This community is located just a mile from the Barlonyo Memorial Site, where 301 civilians were buried after being massacred by the Lord’s Resistance Army. The area is still recovering from the deep scars of conflict, and many families continue to deal with trauma, poverty, and limited access to basic services.

During our visit, we observed several critical challenges affecting the community. Many children are not attending school, especially girls, who shared that they had dropped out due to the lack of access to menstrual hygiene products. Teenage pregnancy is very common, with most girls becoming mothers by the age of 16. This early motherhood often comes with social stigma and very limited support systems.

We also noted a growing problem of alcohol and substance abuse among young people, particularly the consumption of locally brewed alcohol known as Uganda Waragi. This has contributed to an increase in risky behavior, including theft and violence, making it difficult for the youth to focus on education or building a stable future.

In response to these issues, we held several interactive sessions with the young mothers and girls in the community. We emphasized the importance of education as a powerful tool to break the cycle of poverty and encouraged the girls to consider returning to school or enrolling in vocational training programs. We reminded them that early motherhood does not define their future and that with determination, they still have the potential to build better lives for themselves and their children.

We also had open discussions about the importance of delaying marriage and future pregnancies until they reach the age of 18. This would give them a better chance to focus on personal growth and create a stronger foundation for their families. The mothers were encouraged to see themselves not as victims of their circumstances but as individuals with the power to change their future.

Another key part of our visit was addressing the issue of menstrual hygiene, which is often overlooked but has a major impact on the health, education, and dignity of young women. Many girls had never received proper education on how to manage their menstruation safely and hygienically. We provided guidance on the use and regular changing of sanitary pads and explained the health risks associated with poor menstrual hygiene.

To support this, we distributed 100 menstrual hygiene kits to teenage mothers and girls in the community. Each kit included reusable and disposable pads, underwear (knickers), storage bags, clothes, and educational booklets on menstrual hygiene. This small but meaningful gesture made a big difference in the lives of these young women. With these supplies, they are now better equipped to manage their menstruation with dignity and can attend school or participate in daily life without shame or interruption.

Our visit to Acutkum showed us the urgent need for continued support in such post-conflict communities. Despite the many challenges they face, the young people we met were hopeful and eager to learn. We are confident that with the right support and resources, they can overcome these barriers and create a brighter future.

We thank you sincerely for your continued support, which makes this work possible. Your generosity brings real hope and change to vulnerable communities like Acutkum. We look forward to keeping you updated on our progress and future interventions in the region.
