The lingering effects of war and conflict continue to impact children and their education in northern Uganda. Years of conflict, particularly with the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA), left many children abducted, displaced, and out of school. Even today, poverty, early marriage, teenage pregnancy, and family instability prevent many, especially girls, from accessing education.
Children who grew up in displacement camps faced limited learning opportunities, poor living conditions, and trauma that affects their ability to focus on school. Families returning home often found no functioning schools or trained teachers, and many children continue to live in unsafe or unstable environments.
Joy for Children Uganda has been working closely with communities affected by war and conflict to address these challenges. Through community engagement and family support, children gain the stability and resources needed to attend school regularly. We sensitize communities on the importance of education and its benefits, while menstrual hygiene management programs help girls stay in school and fully participate in learning.
The impact of these efforts is evident. Children are returning to school, engaging in learning, and gradually rebuilding confidence and resilience. Families are more stable, and communities are becoming supportive and inclusive, helping children reclaim their educational opportunities.
We are grateful to our partners, supporters, and the communities themselves for their commitment and collaboration, which continues to transform the lives of war-affected children in northern Uganda.
