Promoting Dignity and Confidence Through Reusable Pad Training
AlliedAid Uganda continues to empower adolescent girls in rural communities by providing comprehensive training on making reusable sanitary pads. This initiative responds to the challenges many girls face due to menstrual poverty, which often leads to missed classes, reduced confidence, and increased risk of using unsafe alternatives during menstruation.
The training covered menstrual health awareness, reproductive hygiene, and practical sewing techniques for producing high-quality reusable sanitary pads. Each participant actively practiced measuring, cutting, stitching, and assembling reusable pads using affordable materials that are readily available within their communities.
The sessions also encouraged open discussions about menstruation, helping girls understand that it is a natural part of life rather than a source of shame. Participants were encouraged to support one another and become ambassadors for menstrual hygiene education within their schools and villages.
By the end of the workshop, every girl had completed reusable sanitary pads to take home and had gained the confidence to make additional pads independently. This knowledge will continue benefiting their families and peers while reducing dependence on costly disposable products.

Building Skills for Menstrual Health and School Retention
With support from GlobalGiving donors, AlliedAid Uganda organized another successful reusable sanitary pad-making workshop for vulnerable girls in rural Tororo District. The program focused on equipping girls with practical life skills while promoting menstrual health education and reducing the financial burden associated with purchasing disposable sanitary products.
The workshop combined health education with hands-on sewing sessions. Facilitators explained the menstrual cycle, proper hygiene practices, infection prevention, and the importance of confidence and self-care during menstruation. Participants then worked together to cut fabric, sew absorbent layers, and assemble reusable sanitary pads under the guidance of trained instructors.
Many girls expressed that this was their first opportunity to receive accurate menstrual health information in a supportive setting. They shared that the knowledge gained helped eliminate fear and embarrassment while giving them confidence to attend school during their menstrual periods.
Parents and teachers welcomed the initiative because it provides a practical, affordable solution for girls from low-income households. Beyond improving school attendance, the training also introduced basic sewing skills that may become a source of income in the future.

Reusable sanitary pads training

Empowering Girls Through Reusable Sanitary Pad Training
This reporting period, AlliedAid Uganda successfully conducted a training session on making reusable sanitary pads for adolescent girls in rural communities of Tororo District, Eastern Uganda. The training aimed to address one of the major barriers to girls' education—limited access to affordable menstrual hygiene products. Many girls in these communities miss school every month because they cannot afford disposable sanitary pads, affecting their academic performance and confidence.
During the training, participants learned about menstrual hygiene management, personal health, and the step-by-step process of making reusable sanitary pads using locally available, safe, and durable materials. Practical demonstrations allowed every participant to sew and complete her own reusable pad. Girls also learned how to properly wash, dry, and store the pads to ensure they remain hygienic and long-lasting.
The training created a safe environment where girls openly discussed menstruation, challenged harmful myths, and gained confidence in managing their periods with dignity. Teachers and community leaders appreciated the initiative, noting that it helps reduce stigma while encouraging girls to remain in school throughout the month.
Thanks to the generous support of GlobalGiving donors, dozens of girls left the training equipped with practical skills and reusable sanitary pad kits they can continue using for many months. This initiative is expected to reduce school absenteeism, improve girls' health, and empower them with a sustainable solution that benefits both their families and the environment.
