Trying to be hopeful about the future

By Sharon Coldren | President and volunteer executive director.

CBCC's Labor Day float and church awaiting rebuild
CBCC's Labor Day float and church awaiting rebuild

As we look back at our objectives and goals after the hurricanes of 2017 and how we wanted to help take all the demolished facilities and revitalize them and encourage new kinds of multipurpose facilties to be built for our small community, we are having to face the reality that the Virgin Islands government does not have the  will or the resources (money or people) from FEMA and other government agencies to actually follow through on goals for many parts of the territory including our remote area. Private churches and other nonprofits are also finding it difficult to actually make physical repairs/improvements happen. I don't think the Virgin Islands is alone in this reality.  We may all  need to rethink how we approach the next five years.

I am not going to list everything that has not happened and is still a dream of recovery.  On the bright side, economically, much has recovered or even improved - so people do have jobs, children are in school, and wonderful people are making sure children have summer programs and afterschool programs although still seeking places to do them.

CBCC has used these funds in the last quarter to purchase supplies/support for two summer programs and the Labor Day festivities children's giveaways -to start school off right.

We would like to have the confidence that a new project thrust could be started successfully - through CBCC and multiple nonprofits and the government that  would be a good fit with raising a large amount of funds through GlobalGiving.

Right now these dollars keep the glow alive and our children knowing we care about them.

Thank you  for your caring participation,

Sharon Coldren
