CBCC's Watershed Education Program: Middle & High School Interactive Talk on Marine Technology

By Monica Miller-Smith | Executive Director

As part of CBCC’s water monitoring plan, we are piloting a Sofar Ocean Spotter Buoy and network partner Aqualink to share live/real-time, free available data with our community and the public. CBCC received this buoy as part of Aqualink’s Global Ocean Temperature Monitoring Project in 2020. The solar buoy is one of several ways that CBCC is investing in ocean technology.

The buoy provides temperature data at the ocean surface and near the sea floor; it also generates surface wind and wave data. The buoy’s capabilities can be expanded by adding more sensors. In the future, CBCC plans to add a sensor to monitor water quality.

The sensors and transmitter are powered by an on-board solar panel. The data is transmitted via satellite to the Sofar Ocean and Aqualink (Site 1127) platforms. CBCC staff registered the buoy on both platforms. This enables the team to monitor the state of the buoy (i.e., battery life, GPS coordinates, etc.), review real-time data, participate in the global monitoring network, and share buoy dashboard with the public.

During spring 2024, CBCC developed a Middle School/High School interactive watershed talk for the Sofar Smart buoy to offer through CBCC’s Watershed Education Program. On June 5th, we gave an interactive talk to students from the Peter Gruber International Academy. The educational experience included a PowerPoint presentation, handout, and interactive discussion.
