As the Covid-19 situation worsens, the impacts that the virus has on the economy and the well-being of people are becoming quite alarming. The virus has especially affected low-income families or people working minimum wage jobs. Our Mercy Centre preschools had to officially close during the pandemic time, however our dedicated teachers have continued to go to work every day to prepare assignments for students to collect and complete at home, along with packets of food to ensure that children receive basic nutrition.
Ms. Paveena who has two daughters, is a single mother who doesn’t have a permanent job but works as a general conductor to earn money so that she can support herself and her two children. Her older daughter is currently in high school while her younger daughter is attending the Mercy Centre Preschool. While she is able to save enough money to give her children an education, she has stated that sometimes, she lets them sleep all day because she doesn’t have anything for them to eat. However, the Rice Project is a great help for her and her family, as it often helps them get food to eat.
Ms. Paveena’s family isn’t the only family that is being supported by the Rice Project. Altogether, about a thousand children and community members have been benefitting off of the Rice Project as there have been generous donations, allowing distributions of packaged food to a lot of people who have been negatively affected by the covid-19 outbreaks.
