Why Nutrition is the Foundation of Learning

By Elliott Gooding | Volunteer

Dear Supporters,

We are writing to you today to update you all on what your generous donations have helped enable. Recently we celebrated the graduation of our Kindergarten grade 3 classes. A total of 200 healthy children graduated from our 17 schools.

We are writing to you today with a deep dive into the "why" behind our rice project. While we often see the smiles of the children in the kindergartens we support, the underlying data reveals a silent crisis that affects the future of an entire generation in Thailand.

The Stunting and IQ Connection

In Thailand, the "Double Burden" of malnutrition means that while some children face obesity from poor-quality calories, many in vast areas suffer from stunting and micronutrient deficiencies (specifically Iron and Iodine).

  • The 10-Point Gap: According to the Department of Health (Thailand) and UNICEF, children who suffer from chronic malnutrition before the age of five score significantly lower on cognitive tests. Research indicates that stunted children can lose an average of 10 to 11 IQ points compared to their well-nourished peers.
  • The Critical Window: 90% of brain development occurs before age 5. When a child in one of our supported kindergartens lacks essential vitamins, their brain's "wiring" for logic and literacy is physically hindered.
  • National Statistics: Recent surveys show that nearly 1 in 10 Thai children under five are stunted. In the marginalized communities where we work, these rates are often significantly higher.

Research Note: Sources include the Thailand Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey (MICS) and "The Lancet Child & Adolescent Health," which link early childhood nutrition directly to adult economic productivity.

See the Change in Motion

We want to bring you closer to the impact of your generosity. We have two exciting ways for you to connect with our work:

  1. Our New Website is Live! We’ve built a digital home to house our data, stories, and transparency reports. It’s the best place to see the long-term roadmap for our projects. Check it out here: https://mercycentre.org
  2. Go Behind the Scenes on YouTube We have produced a couple of new videos! Watch our latest uploads to see the delivery of nutrient-dense meals and interviews with local teachers about the improved energy levels in their classrooms. https://www.youtube.com/@hdfmercycentreth4564

Help Us Close the Gap

Our goal this month is to provide 1,000 fortified meals to ensure no child in our partner kindergartens has to learn on an empty stomach—or with a hungry brain.   We have so much more to achieve together, once again thank you so much for your donations and if you could please share this project with other friends and family and on social media this would really help our children further and we would be eternally grateful.

Thank you for believing that every child deserves the chance to reach their full potential.

Warmly,

Your Mercy Team
