Difficult times exacerbates a family's struggle

By Jason Yeo | Public Relations

Rice continues to be a staple food for all our pre-schoolers across our 21 preschools. Mercy Centre is only able to provide rice across our 21 preschools with the generous support of donors, friends and supporters and this support helps provide nutrition, energy and hope to our pre-schoolers. The supply of rice is extremely important for our pre-schoolers but even with the supply of rice, there are many families that are still struggling on a day to day basis.

As the third wave of Covid19 hits poor communities hard across Bangkok, the impact is felt particularly hard for twins, “D” and “C”. D and C are lively, energetic and inquisitive 6 year old twins who attend Flat 12 preschool. At 6 years old, they have experienced immense difficulties, from a mother who is incapacitated due to drug use to a father who is erratic in financial support. As a result, D and C along with their older sister live with their grandmother, who decided to take them in due to a volatile home situation.

In order to provide for her grandchildren, the grandmother works in the Port canteen as a cook. This is particularly hard for the grandmother who is struggling financially herself and has the added responsibility of looking after her grandchildren. Due to these difficult circumstances, Mercy Centre provides, lunch, dinner and milk to cover the children’s basic needs. D and C’s situation continues to be dependent upon an aging grandmother and the provision of food and education from Mercy Centre.

The support from our friends and supporters continues to be crucial in supporting children like D and C. Children whose lives are in the shadow of society and who continue to experience uncertainty, disruption and the threat of poverty on a daily basis. This stark reality is what many children, elderly and community members face every single day.
