Covid19 has had a devastating impact upon the poorest of the poor and affected many families in the Klong Toey area. The lockdown and the social distancing measures have had drastic consequences for the community and this has resulted in rising unemployment, hunger and anxieties about their future. Rice continues to be a source of sustenance and hope for many families in the Klong Toey community.
The impact of Covid19 can be seen through the story of “A” and his family. A is seven years old and he is the eldest of five siblings. He lives with his parents, grandparents and siblings in a small wooden shack. A attended Romklao Preschool before graduating to Primary One. A’s youngest sibling currently attends Romklao preschool. Teachers noted that A was a hardworking and meticulous student who is mathematically inclined. Before Covid19, A’s father worked as a labourer and his mother worked as an administrative assistant. Even with both parents working, Mercy has had to provide nutritious lunches and dinners to A and his siblings When the lockdown stuck, A’s father and mother lost their jobs and the family became reliant on food packs from Mercy Centre. As lockdown measures eased, A’s parents regained employment but still struggle to feed their family of nine. A’s family represents the majority of the families living in the slums of Klong Toey. Families in the Klong Toey slum face daily struggles with poverty, a lack of job security and cramped living conditions. Covid19 and the lockdown exacerbated the already pressing issues that these families face.
We are deeply grateful for all the support that we have received over the years. As families such as A’s continue to fight for their livelihoods, we extend our hand to those in need and touch lives through the provision of rice and food. The support from our friends and supporters continues to be essential in the fight against poverty.
