Rickets Treatment for Children in Bangladesh

Summary

Rickets occurs due to extreme vitamin D deficiency. Hope Foundation uses health workers to conduct community surveys surrounding the rickets problem and teach prevention measures. We evaluate the case of each child suffering from rickets and treat them with vitamin D and Calcium tablets which are of a low cost. For advanced cases, we arrange for the child to be helped with corrective surgery. Please change a life by sponsoring a child.

Challenge

Rickets is a children's disease caused by vitamin D and calcium deficiency due to starvation. Bones become soft and weak, slowing growth and skeletal development. The legs are severely bowed - they form an outward curve shape. UNICEF reports that over 550,000 Bangladeshi children have rickets, and studies show Cox's Bazaar has the highest prevalence (8.7% show at least early symptoms). Giving calcium tablets can reverse rickets, but in severe cases the legs and back are permanently deformed.

Solution

We will treat children at risk for rickets with calcium tablets and vitamin D, teach mothers how to identify calcium-rich foods, and provide nutrition education with flyers and seminars. Many cases can be reversed and prevented with simple treatment, but in advanced cases surgery is the child's only chance. Your donations will provide rickets correction surgery for 55 identified children with severely bowed legs. This project will help more than 100,000 people.

Long-Term Impact

The nutrition education will help the local population to become aware of rickets as an easily preventable disease, mainly focusing on 1,000 mothers who prepare their family's food. Our project will allow 500 children to reverse their rickets with calcium tablets and relieve the suffering of 55 children who are severely affected with corrective surgery.
