Summary

Do you think it is ok for a member of the family to be traumatized and mentally sick with greater feeling of social discrimination? No, we do not either. Rural Initiative for Community Transformation-Uganda believes that every member of the homestead with psychosocial depression, trauma and stigma due to retarded mental health deserve a quality care from their places of residence throughout the lifetime. Imagine living in a community where these people exists and have better quality of life.

Challenge

Globally, about 800,000 people die of suicide every year, meaning one person dies every second (WHO, 2016). Suicide is a global phenomenon and occurs throughout the lifespan. Effective and evidence-based interventions can be implemented at population, sub-population and individual levels to prevent suicide and suicide attempts. There are indications that for each adult who died by suicide there may have been more than 20 others attempting suicide. Suicide occurs throughout the lifespan.

Solution

Therefore, we intend to undertake the following activities in the community. 1. Mobilization and sensitization of the community about suicide and its impacts 2. Identification and strengthening of the local structures in the suicide prevention in the community 3. Providing psychosocial care services to individuals presenting with psychosocial distress. This is aimed at improving the mental wellbeing and empowering the individuals to deal with the life challenges.

Long-Term Impact

The expected project outcomes are hereby as explained below: Increased knowledge and access to information on MHPSS with emphasis on suicide prevention among the population in the project area Increased knowledge and access to information on MHPSS with emphasis on suicide prevention among the population in the rural community in Oyam district. Strengthened local solutions in preventing suicide among the population in Oyam district, Northern Uganda
