Pathways to Community Resilience

By Felisha McBride | Executive Director

5k Mental Health Fun Run Walk
5k Mental Health Fun Run Walk

Introduction

We are thrilled to share the latest updates and achievements from our ongoing programs and initiatives. As we continue our mission to nurture resilience and growth in individuals, families, and the community, we are committed to addressing the challenges posed by change and stress. Through ongoing programs like Nanna Sheppard’s Bedtime Stories and Knitting and Crocheting, we remain dedicated to fostering a sense of community and well-being for all ages.

Our approach includes leading efforts to increase mental health awareness and advocating for improved mental health support systems. We develop and deliver programs that enhance knowledge and promote holistic wellness. By preparing the community to effectively manage mental health challenges before, during, and after disasters, we ensure access to continuous, professional mental health counseling for sustained recovery and well-being. Through these initiatives, we strive to create a strong, connected, and resilient community.

Events and Highlights

Panel Discussion on Bullying
April 8th, 2024
In collaboration with the Rotary Club of Grand Bahama and the Bahamas Ministry of Education, we hosted an enlightening panel discussion on bullying. This event brought together experts, educators, clergy, and community members to address this critical issue. Through open dialogue and shared experiences, we explored effective strategies to combat bullying in our schools and communities, fostering a safer and more supportive environment for Grand Bahamians.

Wellness Wednesday Talk
May 1st, 2024
To mark the beginning of Mental Health Month, we participated in an engaging Wellness Wednesday talk with Angel Russell on Power 104.5. This chit-chat emphasized the importance of mental health and self-care, providing valuable insights and practical tips to our audience.

Fourth Annual Resilience Angel Mixer
May 6th, 2024
We were honored to have Mrs. Ann Marie Davis, wife of Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Hon. Philip Davis, as the Patron and Keynote Speaker at our fourth Annual Resilience Angel Mixer. This celebratory event marked our center’s anniversary and provided an opportunity to honor the generous donors and dedicated volunteers who have supported our mission. The evening was filled with heartfelt speeches, inspiring stories, and a shared commitment to building a resilient community.

Community Health Fair
May 18th, 2024
A community health fair was held at Calvary Bible grounds in partnership with Lucayan Family Concierge and various local organizations. This event offered a wide range of health services, information booths, and wellness activities. Attendees benefited from free health screenings, consultations with healthcare professionals, and educational sessions on topics such as nutrition, exercise, and our staff on mental health. The fair successfully promoted holistic wellness and encouraged healthy lifestyles within our community.

Mental Health 5K Fun Run/Walk
June 1st, 2024
Our annual Mental Health 5K Fun Run/Walk was a resounding success, bringing together participants of all ages to promote physical activity as a vital component of mental health. The event fostered a sense of togetherness and support among the participants, who ran or walked the scenic route with enthusiasm. This event underscored the importance of staying active for mental well-being and highlighted the collective effort needed to address mental health challenges.

Grand Bahama Chamber of Commerce's Community Newsletter Feature
To culminate our contributions to Mental Health Month, we were featured in a special segment of the Grand Bahama Chamber of Commerce's Community Newsletter. This feature allowed us to reach a broader audience and emphasize the message that mental health is just as important as physical health. We encouraged readers to prioritize their mental well-being and seek support when needed, reinforcing our commitment to raising mental health awareness.

Construction and Expansion
June 21st, 2024
June 21st marked the official commencement of construction for our new facility. This expansion project represents a significant milestone in our journey towards sustainability and growth. The new facility will provide us with the space and resources needed to expand our programs and services, allowing us to better serve the community. In the interim, we have secured a temporary space courtesy of the Grand Bahama Port Authority to continue our activities, ensuring uninterrupted support and engagement with our participants.

Camp Discovery
July 1st-12th, 2024
We launched Camp Discovery, a two-week summer camp that catered to 40-50 students each week. This enriching camp provided a diverse range of topics, including self-love, environmental safety, brain health, financial literacy, self-defense, drama, etiquette, and more. Trained facilitators led each session, offering valuable knowledge and skills to the students. Camp Discovery created a dynamic and supportive environment where students could learn, grow, explore their creativity, and form lasting friendships.

Grant Writing Workshop Participation
July 17th-19th, 2024
Mrs. McBride represented the Bahamas Resilience Center as one of 21 NGO representatives in the Bahamas selected to participate in a grant writing workshop hosted by the CPDC. This workshop provided invaluable training and resources, enhancing our capacity to secure funding and support our ongoing efforts. We are excited about the opportunities this brings and the potential to further strengthen our impact on the community.

Conclusion

As we reflect on the progress and achievements of this quarter, we are incredibly proud of the strides we have made towards fostering resilience and growth within our community. Through our collective efforts and the unwavering support of our donors, volunteers, and partners, we continue to create a brighter and more resilient future for all.
