The Rokupa Wharf area of Freetown, Sierra Leone is a coastal fishing community. The overwhelming amount of trash creates unsanitary conditions for all of the people in the community as well as polluting the fish and the ocean at large. On Saturday, October 5 we will be holding a community clean up in order to create a safe and healthy environment for Rokupa wharf and far beyond.
The Rokupa Wharf area is very polluted. There is a great deal of trash, open defecation of both people and animals, and the few accessible toilet areas empty directly into the ocean. All of the trash and pollution also brings many disease carrying insects spreading malaria as well as other potentially deadly diseases. The fish, which is a large part of the communities diet, are being polluted as well as the entire ocean.
We would like to clean up the entire wharf, getting rid of the trash polluting the shores as well as installing compostable toilet facilities that do not empty into the ocean. Drilling a borehole will also give everyone in the community access to clean water. Getting rid of all of the pollution will also reduce the number of disease carrying insects giving all of the residents of the wharf a chance of living healthier and happier lives.
Our desire is to lift the life of everyone in the Rokupa Wharf community and beyond. Addressing the needs of men, women, children and the environment is what this project is all about.
