At 46 years old, Mariam, a resident of Burj Shemali Camp in South Lebanon, never imagined that her rooftop would become a source of resilience and hope for her family. After hearing from her neighbors about Jafra Urban Agriculture Initiative, she decided to apply, hoping to gain practical agricultural skills that could support her family and make better use of the space available in her home.
Through the initiative, Mariam transformed her previously unused rooftop into a productive garden. Growing fresh vegetables at home has helped her family access nutritious produce while reducing the need to purchase vegetables, easing some of the financial pressure on the household.
Today, Mariam’s rooftop stands as a powerful example of how urban agriculture can strengthen household resilience. What was once an unused space has become a productive garden that contributes to her family’s food security, reduces household expenses, and provides a renewed sense of purpose and hope.
With your support, stories like Mariam’s can continue to grow. By investing in urban agriculture and community-based initiatives, we can help more families transform unused spaces into sources of food, income, resilience, and hope, one rooftop at a time.
