Dear readers from around the globe,
We at Karama Organization hope you had an amazing start to 2022! The last year gave us challenges but also fond memories and proud achievements. Excited, and can we even say a little hopeful, for what is to come in the coming year. Though some days it is more "anxious and pessimistic", as our people continue to struggle economically, politically, socially. There are so many negative forces that have impacted our private sector, people working in the public sector who keep losing salaries, but also social structures breaking down and negative trends in society on the rise. But we try to keep our heads up and be that force of good we want to see!
Our frequent readers know Karama Organization up-scaled our food security and women empowerment program between 2017 and 2021 and reached over 220 women and their households in five project locations. Project support has phased out and women continue to grow together in their own small greenhouses, independently. Karama continues to work on many other initiatives in society. Utilizing social entrepreneurship we are hoping to combine both economic and social goals; creating jobs and meeting social needs in our community.
Several projects, often women-led, are supported in our community, and one of them we want to highlight today. Learning about growing organic vegetables and herbs on their roofs, Karama quickly understood the importance of high-quality seeds. To have a good harvest, we need to start at the seed. It is common for the greenhouses to purchase seedlings, small plants between 10-20 days of age, which are then planted in the soil in the greenhouse. Instead of purchasing these seedlings from outside, two women supported by Karama took up the initiative to open a seedling and flower nursery in a greenhouse in Deheishe camp. This will give women in the camp access to high-quality seedlings close by, without needing to worry about the transport or quality of the product. It will also offer a variety of flowers and plants that can be used for decoration in and around the house.
As the refugee communities are encouraged to continue to plant and grow around their house and roof, we envision this project will meet good market demand. Karama hopes to continue to guide these two entrepreneurial women in their endeavors and support them with a small place to sell the products and any tools they need for production. In this way, Karama will continue to stay a "green hub" promoting food security and entrepreneurial projects for refugees.
Thank you for being part of this!
