Callie, Carey Grant, Firefly, and Dexter are loving life in the new sanctuary at the Andrulis house. They have 4 cat trees, several sleeper shelves, a window perch, a newfangled never-ending water fountain, a litter robot, treats, and a never-ending supply of food and treats thanks to the amazing support of donors and volunteers. Callie keeps annoying Dexter even though Dexter does nothing wrong (or does he?); Carey acts like the leading man; and Firefly can’t stop getting mats even with all the hair brushing.
The cats in the auxiliary sanctuary – with Bob and Kathy Rude in Arizona – are coming to terms with the heat and constant sunshine. They are also trying to figure out what to do with the weird creatures that are showing up unannounced in their yard…and in their house.
In one case, Bob was playing a round of golf on the course behind this house when he came upon an approximately 6-day old orphaned javelina. What’s that? Well, a javelina is a pig-like ungulate…and is also known as a “peccary” or a “skunk pig.” By Bob’s estimation, the baby javelina had been without any shelter or herd support for 9 hours when he found it in the middle of hole 7 fairway. He decided that finding it and rushing it home saved him from screwing up what was already a good round. Bob contacted Tucson Wildlife Center (TWC) and they came and picked it up. Fortunately, TWC had another orphaned javelina to keep him company!
The Rudes were also visited by a bobcat who sprayed their bushes but have not yet held court to the mountain lion who roams the neighborhood. I’m sure it’s just a matter of time before these big cats join the Rude Ranch sanctuary!
In closing, we are sad to announce that we lost three sanctuary cats in 2023. Mandi, a black and white feral who came to us in 2021 and became super close with the viral superstar, Static, passed due to fully metastasized cancer. Meowster, the resident foot fetishist feline, passed from complications related to cancer that was blocking 75% of his colon. We lost auxiliary sanctuary cat Bobby Sixkiller to hyperthyroidism, kidney failure, and, ultimately, lymphoma. Long may they purr.
