The main objectives of this project are as follows: First, to supply orphans and vulnerable children (OVCs) with a healthy and inexpensive option to improve their menstrual health: and, to educate young women on the importance of personal hygiene and reproductive health. To improve the sanitary conditions of young orphaned women living in the district. Finally, to provide education on how Reusable Menstrual Pads (RUMPs) can be created to serve as an Income Generating Activity for at-risk youth.
Menstrual Pads are a very expensive and important aspect of a young woman's life, especially here in Uganda. If they are available, at-risk women have to purchase 12 packs of Pads every year to remain healthy. However, Reusable Menstrual Pads also known as RUMPs can be created at low cost and a woman only needs to use 4 of them per year. The savings from using RUMPs as opposed to store bought pads can assist with school fees and other costs since retention in schools is very low.
Not only to RUMPs provide a valuable purpose to a young woman's personal hygiene, they can also be created to be sold as an income generating activity. As mentioned, retention rates in schools are very low due to a variety of factors: School Fees, Malnutrition, Health Concerns, etc. By educating young at-risk women on how to create and use RUMPs, they will be able to maintain their own reproductive health, and potentially start a business of their own to help pull themselves out of poverty.
Sustainable product that can be used for at-home consumption as well as for an income generating activity within the villages. Long term impact revolves around sustainability which will be maintained through adherence clubs and at-risk youth clubs that aim to improve the livelihoods of OVCs in Kalungu District.
