The Maternity service at our hospital has improved greatly over the past 6 months with the addition of a trained midwife - Nurse Alexandre - to the hospital’s medical team.
Women from the local communities and across the North East region are seen by Miss Alexandre who provides their pre-natal and post-natal checkups, and delivers their babies. Miss Alexandre is also responsible for the supervision of the maternity department and the training of the registered nurses.
During the month of March, 280 pre-natal checks were provided and 61 natural births were carried out by the labour team. Of those 61 births, every single mother that gave birth had received pre-natal care. Good ‘pre’ and ‘post’ natal care are key factors in improving the health and wellbeing of both mother and child. It is also so important if mortality rates are going to continue to fall.
To complement and extend the reach of the hospital team, we invest in Community Health Agents who work in the local areas visiting clinics, mothersclubs and community groups where they provide information and education to pregnant women, encouraging them to regularly attend their pre and post natal appointments.
The result that we want to see more and more is a happy mother and a healthy baby.
Despite amazing progress in so many areas over recent years, the hospital is currently facing significant financial challenges. Along with our international partners, HHA is working hard to resolve this situation and ensure no services close, but any additional support you can give at this difficult time would be most welcome. Thank you so much.
