A girl in South Sudan is more likely to die in childbirth than finish secondary school. 1 in every 39 babies born in Haiti will not survive their first month. Across the world, women and children are at risk because they don't have access to basic, life-saving services. This project will provide maternal and infant healthcare in Haiti, South Sudan and the refugee settlements of northern Uganda, making pregnancy, birth and childhood safer, and improving outcomes for some of the most vulnerable.
A girl in South Sudan is more likely to die in childbirth than finish secondary school. 1 in every 39 babies born in Haiti will not survive their first month. Every 2 minutes, a woman dies from pregnancy or childbirth. Nearly every one of these deaths is preventable. Pregnancy, birth and motherhood should be a time of joy and hope - but for thousands of women and girls around the world, it is simply a time of fear.
We provide maternal and infant healthcare in Haiti, South Sudan, and the refugee settlements of Uganda, to make pregnancy, birth and childhood safer, happier, and less scary. This includes community outreach to identify and refer high-risk pregnancies, support for the most vulnerable to access facility-based healthcare in Haiti and South Sudan, training and resource provision within communities to make home births safer, and nutritional support and vaccinations in early childhood.
Safe and healthy pregnancy, birth and early childhood leads to reduced maternal and infant mortality rates, fewer complications at birth, and better health and nutrition in early life. All of this contributes to the healthy development of the new generation - ultimately improving the population's social, economic and health outcomes in the long term.
