The prospects for prematurely born babies in Haiti are often tragically not very good. There are not many places to get specialist care for premature babies, and for many, the cost of the care is unaffordable.
At our partner hospital, the maternity unit is able to provide emergency c-sections, and the Neonatal Unit has the staff and equipment to care for some of the most critically ill babies, including those born several weeks early. And this treatment is given regardless of the family’s ability to pay.
We wanted to share 2 recent stories of very premature babies who have been given a chance to live thanks to the dedication of the staff at our partner hospital.
A mother was referred to the hospital after being identified as having a high risk pregnancy. This was proved correct when the mother gave birth to a daughter at 30 weeks. She faces a battle to overcome serveral challenges, still being supported by a CPAP breathing machine, but is breastfeeding well and gaining weight.
Another baby boy was born at 27 weeks, over 50kms from the hospital. In this situation his chances of survival were slim, but since being referred to us over a month ago, he is still fighting and doing well.
We’re hopeful for both these babies and they are in one of the best places in the North of Haiti for this kind of specialist care. They are just 2 examples of the life-saving stories that are happening every day at our partner hospital in Haiti. It is your support that makes this happen. Thank you!
