Project Report | May 7, 2020
Neonatal care needed throughout COVID crisis

By Tim Holmes | Fundraising Coordinator

Haiti is battling COVID much like the rest of the world, but with much fewer resources than most. However, the need to care for mothers and critically sick babies remains despite all the other needs.

The financial and logistical pressure on the hospital is significant at this time, and it's been difficult to maintain staffing levels, but the NICU has remained open 24/7. In fact, we've recently announced a big project to build a new maternity and Neonatal unit which will provide much improved facilities for babies, their families and the staff. The need for this kind of care in Haiti is extremely high and as one of the leading facilites for Maternity and Neonatal care in the North of Haiti, we are passionate about increasing our capacity in their area. See the images for an idea of what the new unit will look like once funds are raised.

So COVID-19 aside, there's plenty to be positive about at our partner hospital. Just recently a baby girl called Rosie was born pre-maturely at 31 weeks old and has been cared for in the NICU since. For most in Haiti, being born that early has a sad ending. But being referred to our partner hospital gave Rosie a chance. And thankfully she has responded to intensive care and has grown stronger as time has passed. The staff have done an amazing job.

Your support is so important to maintain these vital services especially in tough times like many of us are experiencing at the moment. Thank you so much.
