Focus on community health during COVID crisis

By Tim Holmes | Fundraising Coordinator

COVID-19 is still affecting all our lives and Haiti is no exception. Keeping the Maternity and Neonatal units fully operational and safe remains a challenge but one in which the local staff are succeeding admirably. Thankfully numbers of mothers coming to give birth have remained high ensuring the best outcome for them and their babies. Recently twins were born prematurely needing several weeks in the NICU, but thanks to the care they received, they are now home and doing well.

Part of our COVID response has been to increase activity outside the hospital through our Community Health Team, to help prevent the spread of infection. But we have also maintained our core work to specifically improve maternal healthcare in the community. Recently we completed a distribution on 30 CRADLE blood pressure monitors to 3 government health facilities in North East Haiti. We have been using and distributing CRADLE devices for several years and they really are life-savers!

These devices will help other community health teams and facility staff identify signs of danger in pregnancy more easily. They are simple to operate and understand so can be used by non-medical personnel - a game changer for maternity care in developing nations like Haiti.

The distributions include training for users so they are now in operation and improving health outcomes for women and babies in North Haiti. Thank you for supporting our Matnerity and Infant healthcare in Haiti!
