HHA has been working in the refugee settlements of Uganda since 2017, providing disability care, nutritional support and education in vulnerable communities. Our incredible local team is passionate and resourceful, but often lack the basic items they need to carry out our projects. We've put together a 'shopping list' of items that, while simple, will have tangible impact: from improving the wellbeing of our team and beneficiaries, to making our projects run smoothly. Every little helps!
Uganda is host to 1.4 million refugees - one of the biggest refugee crises in the world, and the biggest in Africa. Since 2017, HHA has been working in the refugee settlements, providing care and services to some of the most vulnerable, including people with disabilities, mothers, and children. Our local team is incredible, but often lacks the basic resources needed to carry out our projects - items that, while simple, make a tangible difference to our work.
In under-resourced settings, simple items go a long way. Our 'shopping list' includes: essentials to improve the wellbeing and dignity of our beneficiaries, like reusable sanitary towels and post-partum maternity pads; items to improve our team's day-to-day, like diaries, overalls, and safety boots; basics to use in our projects, like zip ties for wheelchair adaptations, sewing equipment, and chalk for the school; and equipment for our new clinic, like stethoscopes, scales and curtains.
These items, though simple, will make our projects more efficient and effective, improve the wellbeing of our staff, and enable us to provide dignity and care to our beneficiaries. Ultimately, these small but important improvements will tangibly contribute to the long-term outcomes of our work: empowering people with disabilities, reducing maternal mortality rates, improving refugee education, and building resilient, inclusive communities.
