This project will fund setting up and operating an English library in Changtu County, Liaoning, China, providing access to critical literacy books for 80,000 rural Chinese students. Many rural Chinese students lack library access, fueling dropout rates up to 40%. This space keeps students in school by boosting English literacy, confidence, and self-esteem. As kids thrive, parents see the value and keep them enrolled, ultimately opening global doors for their futures.
Millions of rural children in China lack basic educational resources. Isolated in remote, mountainous regions with poor transit, many communities have no local libraries. China Daily reports that simply visiting a bookstore takes a grueling half-day round trip. Without engaging materials and safe reading spaces, vulnerable students cannot build vital literacy skills. This project will support over 80,000 rural students who lack access to books, reading spaces, and connection to the wider world.
We will build and resource a vibrant English library in Changtu County, Liaoning Province, opening doors for up to 80,000 rural students. Currently isolated from educational tools, these children will gain a safe, dedicated space to read, study, and grow. Providing high-quality books will boost their essential literacy and language skills. More than just a room with books, this library will empower vulnerable youth to discover, dream, and connect with the wider world
The Rural China Library Project will serve up to 80,000 rural students who currently lack access to library services. By providing these resources, it will boost critical literacy skills and self-esteem, helping children stay in school where dropout rates reach 40%. Serving as a pilot, its success will provide a replicable model to open more libraries. Ultimately, this will narrow the urban-rural education gap, ensuring equal access to the resources they need to thrive.
