Summary

This project will build a community clinic in Amewoyikorfe, a village located in the Island areas of the Krachi West District of Ghana. These Island communities have no healthcare facilities with children and pregnant women drowning in the Volta Lake as they travel across it to access healthcare in the district capital without safety equipment. Provision of this clinic will bring healthcare to about 2000 children and women directly and about 10,000 underserved populations around Amewoyikorfe

Challenge

Krachi West District is a rural peninsula located in the Northernmost part of the Oti Region with a population of about sixty thousand. 30% of the total population including Amewoyikorfe are located on Islands dotted along the Volta river without any healthcare facility. The lack of healthcare in these communities results in preventable death of children under five years, death of pregnant women in labour and drowning of children and women who travel on the Volta Lake to seek healthcare.

Solution

Provision of a simple but very modern community clinic in one of these communities will ensure deployment of community health workers and midwives to the community to provide healthcare services to these underserved communities especially children under five years and pregnant women. Community health nurses/officers will immunise children against vaccine-preventable childhood illnesses and midwives will provide prenatal care and delivery services to pregnant women reducing maternal mortality.

Long-Term Impact

The project when fully implemented is expected to make basic healthcare services available to the community with a population of about 2000 people directly and around 10,000 people surrounding this location who will otherwise have no healthcare services directly except through outreaches. In the long term, these communities will gain head immunity against vaccine-preventable infectious diseases and improve general maternal and child health of the community.
