Our teachers have been working on multiple activities to help students practice the information they are learning. Reading in small groups in front of the class is one activity which has a dual purpose of reading practice and learning to speak aloud to groups. Increasing the amount of practice opportunities is another activity which is helpful for all grade levels. Thankfully, many of our students will even choose to practice their reading during their free time.
As the weather has been cooler, the students have been enjoying soups that have been served for lunch. Their favorites are banana flower soup with meat and also fish soup. Theo told our staff that he feels it helps make him strong.
Aside from the chill of the morning air, our team noticed that the students spend a lot of their free time playing on the playground. Running around helps them stay warm during this cool time of year.
In addition to the standard curriculum, our teachers are committed to focus also on daily living, hygiene skills and community-based learning. Even our youngest students are taught about caring for their bodies, how hygiene can keep them healthy, how sugar effects their teeth and bodies, and about keeping their environment around school and at home clean.
One of our talented Believe In Me teachers finds fulfilment while in the classroom and also in teaching her students the art of traditional dance. While contemporary music is as popular in Cambodia as it is around the world, our teachers have always placed tremendous importance on helping students learn about their culture and history. Some of the dances her students learned last year was the Wishing Dance, White Pigeon Dance and Khun Khmer. Each dance requires tremendous patience in both teaching and learning. The dance steps, and positions require precise, slow movement and a lot of stretching and balance, especially for the older students who are learning more complex positions.
Thank you for your continued support of our rural education program in Cambodia. It is making a lasting difference.
