It is globally acknowledged that foodbanking is mostly an 'urban solution' to addressing hunger, given where the actors within the food supply chain are concentrated. This results in an inequitable access to food for those living in rural communities. In response, FoodForward SA developed a rural food security programme to address food insecurity in vulnerable rural communities, where food insecurity affects 1 in 3 people.
Problem: It is globally acknowledged that foodbanking is mostly an 'urban solution' to addressing hunger, given where the actors within the food supply chain are concentrated. This results in an inequitable access to food for those living in rural communities.
FoodForward SA developed a rural food security programme to address food insecurity in vulnerable rural communities, where food insecurity affects 1 in 3 people. This programme was launched in June 2019 and is currently reaching 5 rural communities (over 11,000 beneficiaries) in South Africa.
The long term impact will be improved nutritional status among the rural beneficiaries. In South Africa the problem of stunting among under 5 year olds is 25% and most severe in poor rural communities. Stunting is due to chronic undernutrition. Improved food security will improve nutritional status among children, they will have improved growth, and educational outcomes. Improved food security will improve health, well-being and productivity among the adults living in rural communities.
