This project will help ensure that all children, especially those with disabilities, have home and community environments that are safe, stimulating and supportive of their literacy. HI's teams will work alongside parents, caregivers, community leaders, schools and local partners to improve literacy learning opportunities for children with disabilities in Rwanda.
Children with disabilities are often excluded from educational opportunities. This creates long-term harm as children fail to learn basic knowledge, limiting their ability to find lucrative employment as adults.
Work alongside parents, educators and community leaders to ensure that all children benefit from a safe, healthy and stimulating family and community environment. Children and their caregivers will be identified by community volunteers and referred to relevant support services to provide adapted learning materials, training in sign language and Braille, and assistance in enrolling in school.
Contribute to the literacy of 890,000 Rwandan children by the end of primary grade 3, through holistic pre-primary and primary education and improved social and emotional learning skills. Among them, more than 26,000 children with disabilities, including those who are Deaf or non-verbal, will be supported to improve their literacy skills.
