In a recent monsoon of 2023 communities continue to fight against diseases, a follow-on of catastrophic flooding in 2022, submerged a third of the country, killing 1700 people, and displacing more than 8 million. Building 500 toilets in the Southern province of Sindh will facilitate women, and adolescent girls to adhere to health and hygiene practices, and remain safe. The absence of toilets increases women's dignity concerns at a critical level, causing physiological and emotional stress.
In flood-hit areas, open defecation not only entails security and safety issues but particularly causes shame and a sense of discomfort and fear for women and girls who face the most miserable situation. In general, health is compromised. Not having a toilet puts females at a higher risk of physical assault in the open, who wait for a chance to relieve their natural needs in the dark. Moreover, human feces in the open create an unpleasant environment, ripe for infectious disease breakout.
The provision of a toilet will contribute toward women's well-being, and overall household wellness, and improve personal, domestic, and environmental hygiene conditions among the impoverished populations. Women and adolescent girls can have privacy for menstrual hygiene management. Women can use their time for productive household tasks, allow young girls to attend school, do babysitting and join recreational activities, and enjoy a healthy upbringing.
Toilets will improve overall health in general, and improve the environment of the surrounding neighborhood. There will be fewer chances of getting sick, which will increase the number of days invested in meeting livelihood needs and achieving economic sustainability. Women and girls will adopt safe menstrual hygiene practices with transformed behavior. This appeal addresses a temporary cash-for-work program for households, to construct a toilet and distribute hygiene kits among women.
