Challenge

According to UNICEF, maternal mortality in Pakistan is at 260/100,000 births and infant mortality is 68/1,000 live births. These shocking figures are because Mother and Child care facilities are very hard to come by for the financially constrained. Many pregnant women living in urban slums cannot visit private hospitals due to high cost, and government hospitals are overburdened, with doctors often absent. Many pregnant women are handled by unskilled birth attendants, risking their lives.

Solution

In this project, expecting mothers from abject poverty will be provided antenatal care by experienced gynecologists, medicines and twice a week nutrition at a Medicare Health Foundation hospital, and will eventually have their babies delivered there. Each new-born will be initially kept in our neo-natal nursery and examined by a pediatrician, before being discharged; the mother will receive the requisite post-natal care, giving both the hope for a healthy and happy future.

Long-Term Impact

Through the project, women who would otherwise risk their own and their babies' lives at the hands of unskilled birth attendants, will have a chance to live and contribute to the society; their babies will get a healthy start to life. Our effort will also educate these women on the importance of maternal &infant health; they will in turn be able to share these good practices in their communities, enabling them to improve their health, leading to a drop in maternal and infant mortality
