Summary

Help up to 2,500 women deliver their babies safely with good, evidence-based maternal healthcare. Located in rural Northern Tanzania, Maternity Africa's Kivulini Maternity Centre also provides family planning services, fistula surgery and has a 24-hour emergency theatre for Caesarean Section births and other life-saving treatment. Maternity Africa also provides antenatal care and postnatal care.

Challenge

Tanzania has an obstinately high maternal mortality rate, with 556 women dying per 100,000 live births. Around half of the women give birth at home, or in other risky environments where there are no skilled birth attendants present. Poverty also means that women cannot afford to travel to give birth safely. This often leads to preventable death or horrendous injuries for the mother, and the baby.

Solution

Maternity Africa provides maternal healthcare free of charge to vulnerable and marginalized women and girls of childbearing age, so that they can get help when they need it. This leads to better maternal health outcomes - saving the lives of mothers and their babies, and reducing the risk of injury to them.

Long-Term Impact

More lives saved, fewer birth-related injuries, healthier and more prosperous families and communities.
