Dear donor and friend. In Colombia, students of the last grade have to do social service before graduation. After quite a long break, we recently were happy to receive a volunteer from the German School (Colegio Andino) in Bogotá. Volunteering in a dog shelter is a hard job, exhausting and overloaded with opposite emotions. You really must love animals and accept this challenge inconditionally, but having a kind heart and being compassionate, is not enough. You need commitment, diligence, flexibility and empathy. Elena combines all these factors and turned 50 hours of work and play into a wonderful experience, though her daily routine was quite tough. Preparing the delicous vegetable/meat soup and handing it out to 60 dogs, refilling the water bowls, washing the dishes, special care for the old and sick ones, giving out medicines, folding blankets, playing with the dogs in the green area, cleaning the fridge, watching the escapist Finn, hidrating Nuqui who has a a kidney problem, feeding those who can´t eat on their own, calming down Egon’s tantrum, grooming and spa. That’s quite a lot, but Elena never lost her balanced mood, her patience, her dedication. She was admired by the staff and adored by the dogs and we already miss her.
