Safe Haven in Heaven

By Gudrun Olaya | Project Leader

Dear Donor and Friend, two months ago we we rescued a little dog, about four or five years old. She had been living in a meadow for many years, no regular food, no shelter to sleep, hide or protect herself from the rain, storm or the burning sun. Her first adventure after being rescued was a visit to the groomer´s. Her fur was a mess, filthy and matted, with fleas running all over her tiny body. The change was stunning and such a relief for her. Adapting to a foster home, after an isolated and very lonely life, became a difficult step to take. There was too much action around her, which was quite overwhelming, sleeping under blankets, three meals a day and regular walks with roll-overs on the grass turned only very slowly into a luxurious routine. Leen, as we called her, clearly was a steppenwolf, introvert and shy, but very connected with Nature. Too soon she got her spay appointment, and there was no uterus, but a huge carcinogenic tumor instead, displacing the bladder. Surgery would be extremely risky, but without it she would not survive for sure. It was a long and complicated intervention, but it turned out well and Leen came home to recover. And there was where the nightmare began. Two days later we had to make another decision. Instead of a Safe Haven at home, we would offer her a Safe Haven in Heaven. And believe it or not, a blue dragonfly helped us to make our mind and to prepare Leen for her next adventure. When we  laid her down on the grass to enjoy the sun and the birds´ singing, this tiny dragonfly flew over her, so close, fearless, aware of its mission. Then it placed itself directly on Leen´s head, and our world stopped for a moment, enjoying the magic and wonder. And we knew, it was time to let her go to a place without pain, accompanied by a messenger between worlds. And with acceptance and awe we understood, that Safe Haven can be anywhere. I wanted to tell a different story about Leen, but now I think, this is just the perfect one.
