Common Excuses for Abandonment

By Gudrun Olaya | Project Leader

Dear donor and friend, I think we agree that the abandonment of animals, justified with cheap excuses, is an act of irresponsibility and cruelty. Giving them away because of behavioral problems, don´t make them disappear, leaving them on the street or in a a sparsely populated area, exposes them to more traumas and deadly risks. Let’s have a look at the most common excuses, which we have to face on a daily basis:

  1. I’m moving into an apartment and the owner does not allow any pets (Really? Why do you move in, then?)
  2. The dog grew too big (How big did you think a Rottweiler would get?)
  3. I lost my job and can´t feed them anymore (But you still can feed your three kids?)
  4. My partner doesn´t like them (Seems that he is not the right partner  for you)
  5. They are no longer cute (Did you ever notice the cuteness of a senior dog?)
  6. They are too old (We all grow older and the least you wish is to be dumped at old age)
  7. I’ll go abroad (Even on the moon dogs are allowed)
  8. Behavioral issues (Look for solutions in Canine or Feline Therapies)
  9. Allergies (Allergies can be controlled and overcome)
  10. Change of financial priorities (Financial situations may change. Your compromise with your pet is lifelong)

Sadly enough, that is our reality in a consumer-oriented society with few ethical principles. What once was a cute puppy or kitten, shown as an art product on social media, turned into an old piece of trash without any sentimental value, replaceable, disposable, forgotten. And, let´s be clear, the problem is never the animal, they only react to the lack of compromise and education, to the monotony in their lives and the emotional abandonment that takes place long before the physical renunciation. The problem originates in the incapacity and unwillingness of the “pet owners” to focus on finding a solution, in order to deeply understand their animals’ needs and change their lives for better. It would have been preferable and less painful to buy a stuffed animal.
