Summary

Through A Family for Every Child, CPS has been working with children in Chimanimani district who were orphaned and/or separated from their families as a result of Cyclone Idai in March 2019. The loss of life led to child headed households in need of a home, nutrition and education support. Whilst the project has helped find a family for these children, there is need to enroll them in school so that they are SAFE, maintain DEVELOPMENTAL PACE with peers, are PRODUCTIVE and EDUCATED.

Challenge

Child Protection Society through Family for Every Child has supported children affected by Cyclone Idai. These include single and double orphans, otherwise child headed, resultantly reunified or placed in foster or kinship care. Follow up on children showed their need to emotionally recover, interact with peers and desire for the structure of normalcy including going back to school. With your support, children can enroll in school and provided a platform to share experiences and heal.

Solution

This project will restore structure in children's lives following the chaos caused by Cyclone Idai. With children in school, they spend their time in productive activity, develop along with others, are safe and engage in activity outside of focusing on trauma caused through loss of loved ones and in other instances family homes. The school group sessions will allow children to share their experiences led by a Guidance and Counselling teacher, with discussions on loss and the road to recovery.

Long-Term Impact

This project will ensure that children are enrolled in school thereby preventing them from engaging in risky behavior and harmful practices associated with idle children and adolescents resulting in forms of violence. Further, engagement in school group sessions will allow children to move past the early stages of grief into recovery, thereby evading future ills associated with children with unaddressed psycho-social issues. In turn this will support family integration following a disaster.

This project has provided additional documentation in a DOCX file (projdoc.docx).
