SAFE provides a dedicated recovery service to victims of domestic violence and abuse. We use trauma recovery therapy to support families to heal from the trauma and devastation of domestic abuse. Services offered to families include; 1:1 counselling for adults and children, group therapy, drop in support groups specialist children's programmes and programmes which reach victims who are isolated in rural parts of the county.
In the last 12 months, at least 16,600 women in Devon will have experienced domestic abuse ,which is defined by Women's Aid as an incident or pattern of incidents of controlling, coercive, threatening, degrading and violent behaviour, (including physical, financial, sexual and emotional violence), in the majority of cases by a partner or ex-partner, but also by a family member or carer. There are significant gaps in services and support networks in the county.
Through a combination of passionate paid staff and volunteers, SAFE provides counselling, therapy and support groups for those affected by domestic violence and abuse. We offer community based support to families as well as dedicated projects with children and young people in schools. For over 40 years our work has helped improve the lives of over 400 women and children a year, who have experienced abuse and with further support, we can continue to offer these vital services.
The project will improve the emotional well-being and life choices of families who have experienced domestic violence and abuse. By providing our services we can support victims to heal from the trauma they have experienced allowing them to reclaim their lives and move forwards with hope for the future.
