A safe environment to play games, learn, and interact with peers is provided to children living in impoverished communities in Lusaka, Zambia. Trained health care personnel lead educational games and workshops and help with school work. Children who need extra support are guided to the right agencies. These activities improve the physical and mental health of children living with HIV under challenging circumstances. About 50-80 children participate regularly and a small snack is provided.
A high incidence of HIV, AIDS and malaria, low education, and a high rate of unemployment characterizes our community. Most residents are extremely poor and live on less than $2 per day. A majority of the children suffer from mental health issues due food insecurity, illness, loss of a parent due to AIDS , HIV related stigma, and/or living with extended family who have minimal resources to provide adequate care. Most families have insufficient information regarding disease prevention.
Children are provided with a safe space to play, learn and interact with peers. Trained health care staff lead educational games and workshops and help with school work. Children who need counseling or extra support are guided to the right agencies. As a result children are better adjusted to their difficult circumstances and HIV status. These activities improve the mental and physical health of children and improve school attendance and performance.
With better mental and physical health, children can attend school. Older children get an opportunity to lead educational workshops. Counseling and information about services available is provided to family members. As a result, children develop leadership qualities, mentor younger children, are happier, and better adjusted to their circumstances.
