Overview of First Stage Execution:
Darfur Women Network, a community-led organization, is making significant strides in the Darfur refugee camps in Chad through its Safe Stoves Project. This initiative not only economically empowers refugee women but also protects mothers and daughters from the dangers associated with collecting firewood.
Key Achievements:
On July 6, 2024, 40 courageous refugee women, who have been involved in making safe stoves for over a decade, made a groundbreaking decision. For the first time, they chose to continue stove production during the rainy season—a challenging and risky period. Despite the difficulties, they were determined to generate income to sustain their families.
Today, on August 22, 2024, we are proud to report the successful completion of the first stage of their plan. The women have fulfilled their commitment by producing and delivering 800 safe stoves to our staff in the camp. With the income earned, they can now provide food, clothing, and other essential needs for their families. These women are the only ones in the camp currently earning an income, showcasing their resilience and determination.
Impact on the Community:
Their success goes beyond personal gain; it is a significant achievement for the entire community. By choosing to produce safe stoves during the rainy season, these women have proven themselves to be agents of social change, challenging and transforming the community’s perception of women. Now, they are ready to gather materials and begin the next stage of production, aiming to produce another 800 safe stoves. This continued effort highlights their role as resilient leaders and change-makers within their community.
Gratitude and Acknowledgments:
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to GlobalGiving for their support, which has been instrumental in making this transformation possible. We also thank our dedicated volunteers and the entire Darfur Women Network team for their unwavering commitment to creating a brighter future for these women and their families.
Together, we are fostering hope, resilience, and empowerment in the Darfur refugee camps, one safe stove at a time.
