Project: Safe stoves update
Background and Needs Assessment
Many Darfur refugees in Chad rely on traditional cooking methods that are inefficient and harmful to health and the environment. Safe stoves offer a cleaner, safer, and more efficient alternative. Additionally, the economic situation in the camps is challenging, with limited opportunities for generating income. This project addresses these issues by producing safe stoves and using the income generated to improving livelihoods and fostering economic growth.

Narrator: In the refugee camps of Darfur, many families face daily challenges that go beyond survival. The traditional cooking methods they rely on are not only inefficient but also pose serious health risks and environmental damage. But a change is happening. Thanks to a collaborative effort between the Darfur Women Network and GlobalGiving, a new, safer way of cooking is transforming lives.

Narrator: Introducing the Safe Stoves Project—a community-led initiative aimed at providing a sustainable cooking solution for Darfur refugee families living in Chad.
Representative: "Our goal is to produce 3,200 safe stoves over seven months. These stoves are cleaner, safer, and more efficient. They are not just stoves; they are a lifeline. They reduce smoke inhalation, protect women and girls from the dangers of collecting firewood (Rape and hostile attacks), and contribute to preserving our environment."

Narrator : Forty brave women, many of whom have been part of this initiative for over a decade, are leading the charge. Despite heavy rains and other challenges, they made a bold decision on July 6, 2024, to continue stove production during the rainy season. Against all odds, these resilient women completed the production and distribution of the first 800 safe stoves by August 22, 2024.
Narrator: The income earned from this initiative allows these women to provide for their families—food, clothing, and other essentials. They are currently the only ones in the camp with a source of income, setting a powerful example for the entire community. With each safe stove distributed, we see a tangible reduction in firewood consumption—up to 75%. This means fewer trips to the forest, reducing the risk of violence against women and girls, and less strain on our local environment.
Before the introduction of safe stoves, mothers and daughters made four to five trips a month to collect firewood. Now, they only need to go once a month, collecting from shorter distances and conserving our precious natural resources.Beyond the tangible benefits, this project is fostering social change. The women have become agents of transformation, challenging traditional perceptions and demonstrating the power of community resilience and teamwork.
Together, we are building a brighter future—one safe stove at a time. Join us in our mission to empower women, protect our environment, and foster hope and resilience in the Darfur refugee camps.
