Safe Transport for Rural School Kids in Nigeria

Summary

In rural Nigeria, thousands of schoolchildren risk their lives daily riding unsafe bicycles or walking long distances along busy highways to reach school. This project will provide volunteer-operated motorbikes, with fuel and stipends for riders, to create a safer way for children to travel. By reducing accidents and missed school days, the program will allow children to focus on learning rather than survival on the road. Urgent action is needed now as school attendance drops due to unsafe trave

Challenge

Children in rural Nigeria face serious risks when traveling to school. Many use bicycles or walk long distances on highways without protective gear, exposing them to accidents. Others miss school entirely due to lack of transport. According to UNICEF, road traffic accidents are among the leading causes of death for young people in Nigeria. Without safer transport, children's education and safety remain at risk, reinforcing cycles of poverty and school dropouts in rural areas.

Solution

The project will provide volunteer motorbike riders who receive fuel and stipends to safely transport children to and from school. Each rider will be trained in road safety and equipped with helmets and jackets for passengers. This system reduces reliance on unsafe bicycles and long treks, while creating a consistent and reliable school transport network. By making travel safer, the project will improve school attendance and reduce the number of children exposed to road dangers in rural areas.

Long-Term Impact

Safer school transport will help children in rural communities complete their education and reduce accident-related injuries or deaths. Consistent school attendance means more children finish primary and secondary education, which opens pathways for further study and employment. Families will also feel more secure sending their children to school. Over time, the model can be expanded to additional villages, creating a sustainable community-led solution to unsafe school travel across rural Nigeria
