Summary

The project will construct 6 protected water springs in 3 villages of Kyamusa Kyairweisenya and Kimuhon which will serve over 3118 people who are in dire need of safe (hygienically clean), and reliable water as per our field visits. The provision of protected springs will significantly reduce water borne diseases and will improve the health of women and girls. Children's performance in schools will increase as they will easily fetch water and women will have time for more profitable activities.

Challenge

Most people living in the villages of Kyamusa, Kyairwesenya and Kimuhonde have an acute water problem because of scarce unprotected water sources that cause typhoid and bilharzia. More so it involves long distances to poor quality water sources, this is not good especially for the girl child who may be physically or sexually abused; women also loose a lot of time which would otherwise be used productively. Some springs dry up during dry seasons and maintenance of such water sources is not good.

Solution

The project will offer protection of affordable water supply that is safer, reliable and continuous in supply. The water source committees of beneficiary villages plus the the community will be offered refresher training on issues of hygiene and sanitation plus maintenance of the water points. The project will also focus on mobilizing the communities for hygiene and sanitation campaigns to encourage behavioral change to ensure water points continue to be operational.

Long-Term Impact

The provision of safe drinking water will lead to a significant reduction in water borne diseases and therefore reduced medical bills. Improvement in the safety of women and girls and an increase in the performance of children at school. The project will also impact positively on income generating projects like piggery, poultry and livestock because of reliable water supply which will as well boost the standards of living for the community. Women will have time for more profitable activities.
