Summary

Project Renitantely is a sustainable livelihood's initiative with gender equality at its forefront. Since 2016, SEED has developed efficient beekeeping practises and increased yields for almost 80 individuals, across six rural communities in the Anosy region. In a region where 75% of flora and fauna is dependent on insect pollination, these jobs not only provide families with a long-term sustainable income, and a reliable food course, but also protect the areas high animal and plant diversity.

Challenge

Slash and burn agriculture and deforestation threaten forage (nearby pollen from blooming plants) which is used to feed bees. Without access to forage, beekeeping cannot provide enough money to support rural families. In these communities, individuals face 12-hour journeys by foot to reach towns to sell their honey. The long journeys caused by poor infrastructure make it difficult for beekeepers to make profit, meaning they have little money to purchase materials needed to fix broken hives.

Solution

SEED will work towards improving market access by adapting hive structures and partnering with existing honey collections across the target communities. We will provide forage supplementation by sustainably sourcing plants, trees and other crops enabling secondary food security for local people. In order to repair broken hives, we will subsidise materials to reduce beekeepers' outgoings, whilst managing extra bee banks to prevent overharvesting from wild colonies.

Long-Term Impact

SEED will collaborate with beekeepers to provide sustainably sourced forage, increasing honeybee health. Healthier colonies will facilitate crop production, generating income to countless families, as well as providing better nutrition. To implement these life changing nature-based solutions, we need your support. By giving today you help provide families with a sustainable future. Thank you to everyone that has already donated, your generosity has made a huge difference to many individuals.
