Ethiopia's endemic wildlife

With your generous support, Meseret Humanitarian Organization (MHO) continues its commitment to protecting Ethiopia’s endemic wildlife, particularly the Ethiopian wolf, one of the world’s most endangered mammals, and safeguarding the habitats on which its survival depends.

During this reporting period, the project received US$45 in donor support. Although the funding remained limited, MHO focused on using the available resources strategically to support essential field-level conservation activities. Every contribution, regardless of size, has helped strengthen the capacity of local conservation actors working to protect endangered wildlife.

Progress and Key Achievement

With the support received, MHO equipped two park rangers with essential field materials to strengthen their ability to carry out wildlife protection and habitat-monitoring activities. The equipment is intended to support rangers in conducting routine patrols, observing wildlife, monitoring potential threats, and responding to emerging conservation concerns.

This intervention represents an important practical contribution because effective protection of endangered species depends not only on conservation policies but also on the availability and preparedness of personnel working directly in protected areas. By supporting two rangers, the project has contributed to improving frontline conservation capacity and maintaining a presence in areas where Ethiopian wolves and other endemic species require protection.

Monitoring, Accountability and Next Steps

MHO monitored the use of the available project resources and prioritized activities with the greatest immediate conservation value. Despite the project's limited funding during this period, the organization remained committed to ensuring that donor contributions were used efficiently, responsibly, and for their intended purpose.

However, the current level of funding is not sufficient to meet the broader conservation needs of Ethiopian wolves and their habitats. Continued support is needed to expand ranger capacity, provide additional field equipment, strengthen wildlife monitoring, support habitat protection, and increase community awareness and participation in conservation.

In all ,the US$45 contribution received during this reporting period has produced a tangible field-level result by helping equip two park rangers. While modest in financial value, the support has contributed to strengthening the frontline capacity needed to protect Ethiopia’s unique wildlife.

MHO sincerely appreciates your continued partnership and generosity. Every contribution helps transform conservation commitments into practical action and gives endangered Ethiopian wildlife a stronger chance of survival.

A partial view of cpark ranger officers

During this reporting period, MHO continued the implementation of the project “Safeguarding Ethiopian Wolves from Extinction”, an urgent conservation initiative aimed at protecting one of the world’s rarest canids, the Ethiopian wolf, found only in Ethiopia’s highlands. As always, the progress achieved by MHO is made possible through the compassionate support of GlobalGiving, our individual donors, and corporate partners who share our vision of shared humanity and environmental responsibility. Your support remains central to safeguarding endangered wildlife and strengthening local conservation capacity.

Under this reporting cycle, the project focused on strengthening the field capacity of five park ranger officers working in Ethiopian wolf habitats. The support provided included essential field uniforms and durable footwear to improve mobility, protection, and operational efficiency during long patrols in harsh high-altitude environments. These materials are not only practical assets but also contribute significantly to the professionalism, visibility, and morale of the rangers who are at the frontline of wildlife protection.

One ranger shared that prior to receiving proper field gear, conducting extended patrols across rugged mountainous terrain was physically demanding and often limited the coverage of key wildlife monitoring zones. With improved uniforms and shoes, the rangers are now better equipped to patrol consistently, respond to threats more effectively, and monitor wolf populations with increased reliability. This strengthened field presence plays a critical role in reducing risks such as habitat disturbance, human-wildlife conflict, and illegal activities that threaten the survival of the Ethiopian wolf.

Moving forward, MHO remains committed to enhancing conservation outcomes through targeted support to frontline rangers and strengthening community-based wildlife protection systems. We sincerely thank you for your continued partnership, which directly contributes to the survival of this critically endangered species and the preservation of Ethiopia’s unique natural heritage for future generations

Partial picture of MHO on the field

With your generous support, MHO continues to advance its mission and effectively implement its broader organizational objectives. However, funding dedicated specifically to the project titled Safeguarding Ethiopian Wolves from Extinctionhas remained extremely limited during this reporting period. As a result, despite our strong commitment to conserving this unique primate species, we were unable to mobilize field teams to the designated national park area, which is located more than 600 kilometers from our head office. The distance, combined with the financial constraints, made field deployment and preliminary assessment activities unattainable during the reporting timeframe.

MHO recognizes that long-term organizational success and the sustainability of its interventions depend greatly on the ability to secure consistent, predictable, and sufficient resources. Sustainable conservation efforts require not only technical expertise but also reliable funding to maintain ongoing field presence, community engagement, and ecological monitoring. We firmly believe that no intervention can meaningfully improve the well-being of vulnerable ecosystems or marginalized communities unless the implementing organization can operate continuously, without interruption caused by funding gaps. This principle guides our operational approach and reinforces the need for strengthened investment in mission-driven projects such as this one.

Despite the challenges faced, MHO remains committed to the protection of Ethiopia’s Ethiopian Wolves population and to the broader goals of biodiversity conservation. During this reporting period, our inability to travel to the national park and conduct planned activities underscores the urgent need for additional financial support to initiate fieldwork, implement conservation measures, and engage local stakeholders. We respectfully reaffirm our dedication to this important project and remain prepared to deploy our team and launch key interventions immediately once adequate resources become available. Your continued partnership is essential to ensuring that this rare and iconic species receives the protection it urgently needs
