Sharvani's abuse brought to an end

By Soph Stephens | Digital Manager

Sharvani (name changed), a 22-year-old young woman, sought help after being blackmailed by her former boyfriend for several years. Beginning in 2017–2018, he threatened to share her private photographs with her family, post them online and circulate them offline. These threats were used to control her and force sexual and financial favours, keeping her silent and afraid.

On 20 August 2025, a close friend learned about the abuse and contacted a cyber support counsellor from our project.

The next day, Sharvani visited the centre with her friend, where she received emotional support and reassurance about her legal rights from a member of our partner's team.

With her consent, steps were taken to prevent the spread of her intimate images through an international reporting platform and later the same day, was supported in submitting an online complaint.

The case was taken up urgently and within two days, the accused was traced and apprehended. A written undertaking was obtained, stating that any future sharing of Sharvani’s images or harm to her would result in legal consequences.

Sharvani later returned to this project for counselling to help her recover emotionally and plan for her  ongoing safety and continued mental health recovery.

Through timely support and coordinated action, the abuse was brought to an end, allowing her to move forward with renewed confidence and security.

Your support will mean more women like Sharvani can live a free life, out of the grips of online blackmail.

Thank you and please consider giving today.
