Summary

Since August 2021, the Taliban banned education for girls above 6th grade in Afghanistan. This put a stop to school projects in the region led by Sahar. Instead of giving up on the girls of the region, we have embraced new ways of working with local teachers and organizations to improve equity for girls in Afghanistan through multiple programs in partnership with local organizations. Current programs focus on literacy, computer skills, English, women's empowerment, sewing, and coding!

Challenge

On March 23, 2022, the Taliban reversed their decision to open girls' schools and continued the ban on girls' education above grade 6 indefinitely. Millions of girls are now banned from schools and long to resume their education. Currently, 80% of school-aged Afghan girls and young women - 2.5 million people are out of school. Nearly 30% of girls in Afghanistan have never entered primary education.

Solution

Sahar Education is providing educational opportunities for girls in Afghanistan through trusted on-the-ground partners across the country. Our Stealth Sisters program addresses vital skills for Afghan girls; including English, IT, and a focused approach around gender roles, health, and wellness within their communities. We also offer IT & Coding and Sewing & Literacy programs helping girls and women ranging from 12 to 40 years old. We continually search for new partners to expand our reach.

Long-Term Impact

As the situation evolves in Afghanistan, Sahar Education continues to find innovative approaches to educate girls across the country. We have multiple programs running concurrently, including Underground TechSheroes, Threads of Change, and Stealth Sisters which each focus on helping girls of different educational levels. Graduates of our programs are able to pull their families out of poverty through the skills they learn and the community built. We are impacting communities 1 girl at a time!
