The main aim of this project is to scale up performances in rural Kenya especially East Pokot sub-County which is mainly occupied by Pastoral Communities. Providing and distributing Sanitary Pads in this remote area ensures that needy but bright girls do not continue to miss class attendance 5 days every month while in their menses due to lack of Sanitary towels because their performances are compromised and as this becomes a routine, they eventually dropout of school completely.
A large number of girls in East Pokot skip school at the time of their menstruation because they cannot afford to buy sanitary towels. Every week, one or two girls have to stay away from school when they are menstruating. A girl without access to sanitary towels feels embarrassed, unhygienic and uncomfortable. She also loses self-esteem and the confidence to interact with her classmates, or with teachers in the classroom. Sanitary towels, therefore, are a serious education issue in the District.
A girl absent from school for four days in 28 days a month loses 13 learning days. In an academic year (nine months) a girl loses 39 learning days. Within the four years of high school a girl can lose 156 learning days equivalent to almost 24 weeks out of 144 weeks of learning in High school. Our objective is to provide Sanitary Towels support to 30 school going girls in Secondary Schools as well as carry out awareness campaign on use and importance of Sanitary Pads in the Pastol East Pokot.
The project will provide Sanitary Towels to 30 school going girls in East Pokot and awareness creation to the approximately 840 school going girls in reproductive age in East Pokot secondary schools. the conditions for a girl-child to get an education here are really difficult. Sanitary Pads greatly support education retention of these girls.
