Brighter Days: Menstrual Care for Pokot Girls

By Margaret Wambui | Project Leader

Executive Summary:

This project aimed to address the menstrual hygiene needs of underprivileged girls in East Pokot, Kenya, by distributing sanitary pads to 12 schools in the region. Implemented by Hifadhi Africa Organization (HAO), with donations from GlobalGiving. The project successfully provided 300 packets of sanitary pads to girls in need. The distribution of sanitary pads contributes significantly to improving the health, dignity, and educational outcomes of these girls.

Introduction:

Menstrual hygiene management remains a significant challenge for many girls, particularly those from low-income families in rural areas. In East Pokot, Kenya, access to sanitary pads is limited, leading to girls resorting to unhygienic alternatives or missing school during menstruation. Recognizing this issue, Hifadhi Africa Organization initiated a project to distribute sanitary pads to needy girls in schools across East Pokot.

Project Implementation:

HAO procured 300 packets of sanitary pads through donations received via GlobalGiving. The distribution was meticulously planned to ensure equitable access among 12 schools in the region.

Key Activities:

Needs Assessment: HAO conducted a thorough assessment to identify schools with the highest need for sanitary pads in East Pokot.

Procurement: Sanitary pads were procured from reputable suppliers, ensuring quality and reliability.

Logistics: HAO organized the transportation of the sanitary pads to distribution points in East Pokot.

Distribution: Working closely with school authorities, HAO distributed the sanitary pads directly to the girls in need.

Awareness Campaign: Alongside the distribution, HAO conducted awareness sessions on menstrual hygiene management to educate girls on proper usage and disposal of sanitary pads.

Impact:

The distribution of sanitary pads had several positive impacts:

Improved Hygiene: Girls now have access to clean and hygienic menstrual products, reducing the risk of infections and other health issues.

Enhanced Dignity: By providing sanitary pads, the project has helped restore the dignity of girls who previously struggled to manage their menstruation effectively.

Increased School Attendance: With access to sanitary pads, girls are less likely to miss school due to menstruation, leading to improved educational outcomes.

Empowerment: The project has empowered girls by breaking the stigma surrounding menstruation and promoting open discussions about menstrual hygiene.

Challenges Faced:

Logistics: Transportation of sanitary pads to remote areas posed logistical challenges.

Cultural Barriers: Overcoming cultural taboos and misconceptions about menstruation required sensitive and tailored approaches.

Project Sustainability:

To ensure the sustainability of the project, HAO plans to:

-Conduct resource mobilization for ongoing procurement of sanitary pads as they are greatly needed.

-Provide training to school staff on menstrual hygiene management to continue education efforts.

Conclusion:

The distribution of sanitary pads to needy girls in East Pokot has been a significant step towards addressing menstrual hygiene challenges in the region. Through collaboration with GlobalGiving and support from donors, Hifadhi Africa Organization has made a tangible difference in the lives of these girls, promoting their health, dignity, and education.
