Period Positivity: Empowering East Pokot Girls

By Margaret Wambui | Project Leader

 Introduction

The Hifadhi Africa Organization (HAO) is dedicated to improving the lives of marginalized communities, with a particular focus on empowering girls in underserved regions. As part of this commitment, HAO recently conducted an initiative to distribute sanitary pads to teenage girls in East Pokot, Kenya. This project, funded through generous donations received from the GlobalGiving platform, aimed to address the pressing issue of menstrual hygiene management, which is a significant barrier to the education and well-being of girls in the region. A total of 200 packets of sanitary pads were donated to girls in 8 schools across East Pokot.

 Background

Menstrual hygiene management is a critical yet often overlooked issue in many parts of Kenya, particularly in remote and marginalized areas like East Pokot. Many girls in these regions lack access to affordable sanitary products, which forces them to miss school during their menstrual periods, leading to gaps in their education and, in some cases, dropping out entirely. This not only affects their academic performance but also contributes to the perpetuation of gender inequality in education and broader social contexts.

Objectives of the Distribution

The key objectives of the sanitary pad distribution initiative were:

  • To ensure that teenage girls in East Pokot have access to necessary menstrual hygiene products, allowing them to attend school regularly and without interruption.
  • To raise awareness about menstrual hygiene and its importance in the overall health and well-being of girls.
  • To empower girls by breaking the silence and stigma surrounding menstruation, encouraging them to take control of their menstrual health.
  • To contribute to the retention and academic success of girls in East Pokot by removing a significant barrier to their education.

 Implementation

HAO identified 8 schools in East Pokot where the need for menstrual hygiene products was most acute. The selection of these schools was based on factors such as the number of female students, the level of access to menstrual hygiene products, and recommendations from local education authorities.

The funding for this initiative was made possible through generous donations received from the GlobalGiving platform. A total of 200 packets of sanitary pads were distributed across these 8 schools. The distribution was carried out in collaboration with local school administrators, teachers, and community leaders to ensure the smooth and equitable distribution of the products. In addition to the distribution, HAO organized informational sessions at each school to educate the girls on proper menstrual hygiene practices and to address any questions or concerns they had.

Impact

The sanitary pad distribution initiative had a profound impact on the lives of the teenage girls in East Pokot:

  • Improved School Attendance: The provision of sanitary pads has significantly reduced the number of school days missed by girls during their menstrual periods, allowing them to keep up with their studies.
  • Enhanced Self-Esteem: Access to sanitary products has boosted the confidence and self-esteem of the girls, enabling them to participate more actively in school and community activities.
  • Increased Awareness: The informational sessions helped to dispel myths and break down the stigma associated with menstruation, fostering a more supportive and understanding environment for the girls.
  • Community Empowerment: The initiative has encouraged dialogue within the community about the importance of supporting girls' education and addressing gender-specific challenges.

Challenges

While the initiative was largely successful, it did encounter some challenges:

  • Logistical Issues: Transporting the sanitary pads to the remote schools in East Pokot was challenging due to poor road infrastructure.
  • Cultural Sensitivities: In some areas, cultural taboos around menstruation posed challenges in openly discussing the topic with both girls and community members. However, through careful engagement and culturally sensitive approaches, these challenges were mitigated.

Conclusion

The distribution of 200 packets of sanitary pads by HAO to teenage girls in 8 East Pokot schools, funded through donations from the GlobalGiving platform, has had a meaningful and lasting impact on the education and well-being of these girls. By addressing a critical barrier to education, HAO has not only improved the lives of these girls but has also contributed to the broader goal of gender equality in education. This initiative underscores HAO's commitment to empowering girls in marginalized communities and ensuring that every girl has the opportunity to succeed in her education without the hindrance of menstrual hygiene challenges.

Future Recommendations:

  • Sustainability: There is a need to establish a sustainable supply of sanitary products to ensure that girls continue to have access to these essential items.
  • Expansion: Consider expanding the initiative to include more schools in East Pokot and other underserved regions.
  • Community Involvement: Engage more deeply with the community to foster long-term changes in attitudes towards menstruation and to support girls' education.
