Summary

This project will help to increase the proper sanitation infrastructure for the communities of Tzanjuyub, Pasachuach, and Xeabaj II. These communities have recently been forced to relocate to the top of a mountain range, which created a need for harvesting rainwater. Being relocated also revealed a need for a water sanitation program due to having less access to fresh water at a higher elevation.

Challenge

Due to climate change and land conflicts, K'iche communities have been forced to relocate to the top of the mountain range, making this region more densely populated, which requires more public health infrastructure. These communities are located at the top of the Lake Atitlan watershed, which is part of critical ecology for migratory bird populations. Along with affecting the bird population, poor water sanitation also impacts the growth of children in the population.

Solution

This project helps out the K'iche communities in two ways: First, by building out rainwater harvesting systems to increase the amount of water they have access to at the top of the mountain range. Second, by constructing a water sanitation system for them to be able to reuse the water they collect.

Long-Term Impact

The project will provide the community with more clean water, allowing them to worry less about having water to drink with, cook with, and bathe in. Along with relieving stress about water, it will allow children in the population to have access to clean water, growing stronger than they have been with current limited access.
