Save 1 million lives: new opportunities for Colombian patients

Many countries suffer from not having a good organ donation and transplantation system. Colombia suffers from the same problem, specifically in Barranquilla. In 2018, Colombia had a 4% decrease in organ donors. The total number of donors was 418.

Many patients spend months and years waiting for an organ that is compatible with their genetics. Others lose their lives because they never had the opportunity to have a transplant. As mentioned above, Barranquilla is the region with the worst donation rates in Colombia. However, we, Donation and Transplantation Institute (DTI) with the help of the sponsors of GlobalGiving gave Barranquilla patients a new opportunity of life.

The DTI foundation mission is to support international public and private entities who work in the health care system to strengthen the programs, services, and projects in the field of organ donation and transplantation. The organization aims to improve the quality of life of those waiting for a transplant. The main goal of DTI is to raise organ donation in the world.

In the month of February, DTI trained a Colombian Intensive Care doctor in the process of organ donation and transplantation. He participated in an advanced Transplant Procurement Course- TPM, which trains health professionals in the area of organ donation and transplantation. The main goal of this course is to share the knowledge and experiences of professors and participants. The course wants to promote and apply these experiences and knowledge to better the results of the organ donation and transplantation process. The Colombian doctor also visited the donation unit of the Hospital Clinic (Multi-transplant Center).

The doctor is ready to return to Colombia to put into practice everything he learned in the TPM course.
