Thanks to your generous support, our Save 1 million lives campaign continues to empower healthcare professionals from low- and middle-income countries to build strong, ethical organ and tissue donation systems. Our goal remains the same: to give more patients a second chance at life by training the teams who can make donation and transplantation possible in their hospitals and communities.
What we’ve focused on over the past months
With your help, we have continued to invest in three main areas:
Strengthening national transplant systems in Sri Lanka
In 2025, our team supported the national efforts in Sri Lanka to consolidate their organ donation and transplantation system. During a recent mission, the DTI Foundation team worked side by side with local professionals, delivered training sessions, and participated in high-level institutional meetings, including an event with the Prime Minister, to reinforce political commitment to donation and transplantation.
Training case managers in Saudi Arabia
Through the MODHS-MOT Case Managers Development Program, we are helping transform military hospitals of the Ministry of Defense in Saudi Arabia into centers of excellence in organ and tissue transplantation. This one-year program (September 2024 to September 2025) trains nurses, radiology technicians and other professionals to coordinate donation and transplantation processes, improve patient follow-up, and strengthen multidisciplinary teamwork.
Expanding education through TPM courses and social webinars
At our training hub in Barcelona, we continue delivering our flagship TPM courses. In 2025 we celebrated the 35th edition of the TPM Course, welcoming healthcare professionals from different regions to learn about best practices in donor detection, family approach and ethical criteria for organ and tissue donation. In parallel, we launched a series of social webinars in collaboration with patient associations to raise awareness and connect clinical practice with patients’ perspectives.
Across all these initiatives, the same model guides our work: we train local leaders who will go back to their hospitals and countries and multiply the impact. Over the years, the DTI Foundation has trained more than 14,000 healthcare professionals from over 100 countries through our TPM education program.
How your donations are used
Your contributions to Save 1 million lives are directly supporting:
Scholarships and partial grants for doctors and nurses from developing countries to attend TPM courses and internships in Spanish reference hospitals.
On-site missions where our experts travel to partner countries to deliver tailored training, advise ministries of health and hospitals, and support the implementation of donation and transplantation programs.
Educational materials and online learning, allowing participants to continue learning and training their teams after the formal course is completed.
Partnership building with international societies, local coordinators and patient organizations, which is essential to make donation and transplantation sustainable in the long term.
Every report, every training and every mission is made possible because people like you chose to support this project.
Early impact and why this matters
Globally, less than 10% of the organ transplants needed are actually performed. One of the main reasons is that many health professionals never receive specific training in organ and tissue donation.
By investing in training:
More potential donors are identified in intensive care and emergency units.
Families receive better information and more compassionate support when making a decision about donation.
Hospitals develop clear protocols, quality standards and ethical safeguards that increase trust in the system.
Countries can reduce dependence on long-term dialysis and improve the quality of life of patients with end-stage organ failure.
We are already seeing these changes in partner countries: stronger coordination teams, more awareness activities, and growing political and institutional support for donation and transplantation.
What comes next
In the coming months, with your continued support, we plan to:
Consolidate the ongoing training programs in Sri Lanka and Saudi Arabia, ensuring that the newly trained professionals are fully integrated in hospital teams and systems.
Offer new training opportunities through upcoming TPM editions, including scholarships for professionals from Africa, Asia and Latin America.
Expand our social webinars and educational initiatives with patient associations, so that more communities understand the life-saving power of organ donation.
Our vision remains ambitious but clear: to save one million lives by training thousands of medical teams who will transform donation and transplantation in their countries.
